So far, I’ve explained my rating system; and compared its
current assessment of the top teams to that of the ICC system. But we can look back further. Here are the teams that my system has rated
as top since 1952, and on the right, the comparable ICC ratings, courtesy of
Wikipedia. In the following table, team leading in my ratings
(and the dates of its spell on top) are on the left; the comparable data from the ICC ratings are on the right, and the spells have
been laid out so that the start dates of each spell in either rating list are sequentially ordered, top to bottom and left to right. This is less complex than it sounds, so let's have a look at the data:

There are some general conclusions that can be drawn at once. Firstly, both systems agree the
majority of the time. This might not be
intuitively clear from the table without a close look, but there are long
periods of convergence, while the periods of divergence are quite frequent but
mostly short, and are often found during an era where one strong team was
in the process of being replaced by another and the overall pecking order was
actually quite unclear. Secondly, these
transitions generally come sooner in my system, but also less decisively (there
are several sequences where two teams alternate in the lead for a while,
whereas the ICC system has a greater tendency to feature clean breaks). There is in fact a reason for this: the ICC
recalculates the ratings after each series, whereas I recalculate after each match (which
means recent results count immediately, but a close series between two top
teams could repeatedly change the team out in front).
And there’s a deeper reason both why the two ratings are in
broad agreement. The ICC system is not
strictly speaking an Elo-system, but rather a somewhat peculiar system that
nonetheless has certain similarities to one. In our next posts,
we’ll try to understand exactly how the ICC system works.
